地勢

埼玉県のほぼ中央に位置し、南部は川島町、西部は東松山市、東部は鴻巣市と北本市、北部は熊谷市に隣接する東西約7キロメートル、南北約8キロメートル、総面積38．64平方キロメートルのまちです。都心から50キロメートル圏にあり、東武東上線やJR高崎線、関越自動車道などへ容易にアクセスできます。また、町の大部分は平野部で、東部に荒川、南西部に市野川が流れ、肥沃な穀倉地帯となっています。西部丘陵地一帯は県立比企丘陵自然公園に指定されており、吉見百穴や八丁湖周辺に散在する黒岩横穴墓群などは、古墳時代を代表する貴重な史跡として注目されています。

沿革

その昔、吉見町一帯は横見郡と呼ばれていましたが、大政奉還や王政復古などの大改革を経て、明治22年の町村制施行によって東吉見村、西吉見村、南吉見村、北吉見村の4ケ村に編成されました。そして、明治29年には比企郡に統合されて、横見郡という名称はなくなりました。昭和29年7月1日には昭和の大合併により4ケ村が合併して吉見村が誕生しました。さらに、昭和47年11月3日に町制を施行し吉見町となり、現在に至っています。

合併した4つの吉見が、首長を中心にしてガッチリ手を組み、どの方向から見ても均衡のとれた安定感をもたせ、四方に突き出た先端は東（E）南（S）西（W）北（N）を意味し、どこまでも生成発展する吉見町のたくましさを象徴しています。

吉見町民憲章〔昭和59年7月28日制定〕

わたくしたちは、みどり豊かな自然に恵まれ、由緒ある歴史と伝統にはぐくまれた吉見町を愛し、より明るく住みよい町をつくるため、町民憲章を定めます。

1 自然を守り、環境をととのえ、きれいな町にしよう。
1 歴史を愛し、文化を育て、心ゆたかな町にしよう。
1 産業を伸ばし、勤労を尊び、活力ある町にしよう。
1 人権を尊重し、福祉をすすめ、住みよい町にしよう。
1 スポーツを愛し、心身を鍛え、明るい町にしよう。

町の花、木、鳥〔昭和59年7月28日制定〕

合併30周年を記念して、町民の方から町の花・木・鳥を募集したところ、数多くの応募がありました。吉見町コミュニティ推進協議会において、吉見の歴史や生活とのかかわりをもとに討議し、町の花に『きく』、町の木に『けやき』、町の鳥に『ひばり』を決定しました。その後、議会を経て、正式に制定されました。

吉見町平和都市宣言〔平成12年9月11日〕

明るい太陽のもとふれあいに満ちた幸せ
美しい緑と歴史の回廊ふるさと吉見
今平和であることを心に受け止めて

わたくしたちの願いは、全世界に暮らす人々のかけがえのない命を大切にし限りない繁栄と平和社会を築くことです。
わたくしたちは、過去の歴史の教訓を踏まえ、人が人の命を傷つけ奪い合う戦争の悲劇を繰り返さないと表明します。
そして唯一の被爆国として、核兵器の完全な廃絶を強く訴えます。
わたくしたち吉見町民は、未来に向けて平和の確立を願いここに記念すべき西暦2000年にあたり「平和都市」を宣言します。

geographical features

Yoshimi Town is located in the center of Saitama Prefecture. It is bordered on the north by Kumagaya City, the east Kounosu City and Kitamoto City, the south Kawajiima Town, and the east Higashimatsuyama City. Its width is 7km(East-West), its length is 8km(North-South), and it covers an area of 38.64km2. Yoshimi Town is Located about 50 Km from central Tokyo. It is easily accessible to the Tobu Tojo Line, JR-Takasaki Line, and Kan-Etsu Expressway. It is generally flat and has rich field. Its western area has some historic spot, such as Yoshimi-Hyakuana and Kuroiwa-ancient tomb, certified as Prefectural Natural Park and attract attention by many peoples.

history

Yoshimi area had been called as “Yokomi-gun” in Edo period. It was divided into Higashi-Yoshimi village, Nishi,-Yoshimi Village, Minami-Yoshimi Village, and Kita-Yoshimi village in 1880. In 1954, the four villages were integrated in Yoshimi Village and become Yoshimi Town in 1972.

Each side of the quadrangle means old Higashi-Yoshimi Village, Nishi-Yoshimi Village, Minami-Yoshimi Village, and Kit-Yoshimi Village, integrated in Yoshimi Village 1954. This icon carries symbolic meaning that Yoshimi Town will evolve strongly.

We, the Citizens of Yoshimi Town, establish a Yoshimi citizen’s character to like Yoshimi Town with rich natural surroundings and old history, and to make a better town to live.

We shall protect nature, and maintain a environment and make a clean town.
We shall respect history of Yoshimi, foster a culture, and enrich individual’s spiritual life.
We shall develop industries, value labour, and make Yoshimi a lively city
We shall respect human rights, promote welfare, and make Yoshimi Town a better town to live.
We shall like sports, train our body and mind, and make Yoshimi Town a good town.

We strongly appeal for the abolition of nuclear weapons as the only country to have suffered atomic bomb.
We hope peace in the future earnestry. Therefore, we now declare our city as the “ Peace City”. in A.D. 2000.
